"Army" in the Burmese (Myanmar) language. During the early 20th century, the Young Men's Buddhist Association advocated the establishment of military training corps for young Burmese men, but it was only in 1930 that the Ye Tat (People's Army) was established, under the auspices of the General Council of Burmese Associations. It became extremely popular, especially in the countryside, although the British colonial government prohibited its training with real weapons. The Ye Tat played an important role in National Day and other celebrations and was much imitated, especially by political parties and student activist groups. The Dobama Asiayone established its own tat, as did the Rangoon University Students' Union. Dr. Ba Maw's Sinyetha Party had a paramilitary unit called the Dahma Tat (dahma being a hewing knife used by farmers), and U Saw organized the Galon Tat, which often attacked the meetings of rival political groups and behaved like the Blackshirts of Mussolini (whom U Saw admired). By 1939, the Galon Tat had reached a strength of around 100,000.
